There Is Aways Tomorrow

It’s been a month since I created my photography website and did my very fist blog post. Since then I’ve been a little distracted with some other photography related projects I’m working on but in addition I’ve been thinking about what my blog posts should be about. What I’ve decided, at least for now, is that I should post about my journey, my experiences and my observations while pursuing, a later in life career, as a photographer.

So to kick things off I wanted to share something that I’ve noticed recently and that is how my attitude to taking photographs seems to have changed.

I do a lot of hiking as I really enjoy being out in nature and it gives me plenty of time to ponder about my photography, my kids and life in general. As I always carry my photography gear with me on my hikes you’d think I’d make the most of it and take numerous shots. Well, I use to do that but now I find myself taking less shots and that got me thinking as its not what I would have expected.

I think this change has a positive and a possible negative side that I’ll explain.

The positive side. I’ve definitely been more thoughtful about what shots I should take and applying well known photography guidelines including; composition, leading lines, reflections, rule of thirds, framing, the subject, supporting elements, the story, etc. This means I’m being more deliberate with my photography and what I want to capture.

The negative side. Being more critical, perhaps even over thinking a shot, I end up taking less shots which could actually mean I might be missing a shot. Many times in the past I have returned from a photo hike where I’ve taken many images and I’ve discovered a shot that I didn’t think would work was the best of the bunch.

In conclusion, I believe that my photography and attitude is changing for the better. Photography is an ongoing learning curve but I think I now have a growing eye for what will work versus what I think would not make the cut, or need significant post processing editing. However, at the end of the day if I didn’t get my camera out as I wasn’t inspired to do so I’ve still had a great day out and perhaps the next photo hike will come with greater inspiration.

There is always tomorrow.
